Robin Post Lane

See the video/comment on youtube.

Robin Post Lane is 2550 meters long (1.58 miles) which took me 8.43 minutes to ride, at an average speed of 11.25 mph. It is a BOAT (byway open to all traffic). You can expect to find:

  1. A non tarmac surface
  2. Deep Ruts
My description:

Nice wooded lane. Some 4x4 vehicles illegally play in the woods.

Don't let this great lane get TRO'd

This byway is recommended.

Nice long lane quite muddy in places but hard under the mud

Looks completely different in summer, and there are a few troughs that go right across the lane to catch you out.

Driven (4x4) 31.12.10 and several other occasions.

Great lane - wide and clear, though potholed frequently in some parts, but nevertheless easily passable in a 4x4. The ruts are deep in places but all these are easily avoidable.

Lee - Robin Post Lane is a legal byeway if you stay on the main track, but all those that turn off it are either bridleways or footpaths and therefore not legal for any 'mechanically propelled' vehicles.

I've met people on horses down here - most are fine with 4x4s as it's a wide track, but I always stop and turn off the engine to let them pass and would suggest others do the same. One very irate rider informed me (in impolite tones) that there would "be no lane left by Winter". This was despite me stopping, turning off and asking her which side she'd prefer to pass. I refrained from asking her if she'd ever tried walking or riding a bike on a track where horses had ridden in the wet. ;-)

Drove this one in the Subaru Forester 24.2.11. Very wet and muddy. Plenty of horse riders - but then it was half term. Always stopped and turned off the engine for em. If the pot holes get any deeper I might not manage them! There is evidence of large 4x4s going 'off piste'.

Did this one in January 2011 in a SJ with (unbeknown to me) no drive to front wheels so if I'd got stuck I'd be scuppered.
A bit bumpy in places and got a real nasty look from a dog walker despite slowing to a crawl. However, stopped for a horse and got a smile and a thanks so up yours dog woman.

Went to try this lane today starting at the arlington end but there were 2 concrete blocks blocking the way through. Surely if this is a BOAT they cannot do that.

Very easy straight forward ride but watch out for the mud!!

 TRO'd for 4x4 until May '12 I think

Wouldn\'t be surprised if that TRO gets extended - it has happened with a few other lanes around the area. I suspect they want to permanently declassify it :-(

1-10-12. Just got off the fone from Rights of Way team after making enquiries about the classification of this byway after being TRO'd for waterworks maintainance to be carried out til 1st October 2012. The bad news is that the council will be extending the TRO until the spring, likely til 1st April 2013. Shame really, been looking forward to driving this one! :-(
Anyways, we all know now, sorry to be the bringer of bad news.

Drove this Southbound 9/10/15. Now subject to winter season closures (ref: ESCC ROW map pages), Has been resurfaced a while back (similar to when I started green laning in the mid '90s, starting to get a few small potholes again, but quite drivable, even in a standard car. It has gates along it & 1 about mid way is narrow, got through ok in my hippo, but RRC's etc may find it quite tight. At the southern end, there are bollards, the R/h is a drop type, small inconvenience, but hopefully stop fly tippers etc
